| 1950年代中期、防空用要撃機としてノースロップ社が開発した機体がF-89“スコーピオン”である。そのテスト機のプロモーション写真の中に、非常に興味深いジャケットを着たパイロットが2人立っていた。“赤いMA-1”・・・黒いリブをおごったその姿はMA-1系ジャケットに相違無く、写真のキャプション自体もその内容を示していた。当時、莫大な国家予算を握っていた空軍が最も力を入れていたのが防空用要撃機であった事から考えると、何とか次期主力要撃機の座を射止めようとするノースロップ社の意気込みがこの“赤いMA-1”から感じ取る事が出来る。その史実からすると、この“赤いMA-1”はメインマテリアルである赤いナイロン素材を特別にオーダーして織り上げたことから稀少性が高く、その生産ロットを考えると数十着しか存在しなかったであろう。ライニングのセージ・グリーンが50年代のフライトジャケット色を色濃く映し出すと同時に表地の赤と絶妙なコンビネーションを見せている。“燃えるように赤いMA-1”・・・半世紀の時を越え、私達は遂にその目撃者となる。 |
| The F-89 “Scorpion” was designed for the United States Air force by the Northrop Co. in the mid 1950's to be an interceptor of enemy bombers, not a dog-fighter. There are some interesting Northrop photographs that depict two pilots standing in front of a new F-89H and preparing for a demonstration flight. The jackets worn by these two pilots are anomalies, both being RED MA-1 jackets, the likes of which we have never seen before. It is said that the number of these RED MA-1’s actually produced was very limited since the red nylon material for the jackets needed to be woven on custom order. A half century later we finally can offer this “Burning-Red” MA-1 to our customers! |
