通常デッキジャケットといえば、その多くが厚手のジャングルクロスのコットン製であるが、このジャケットには非常に珍しいレーヨンコットン地を用いている。生地の打ち込みが良く、しっかりと目が詰まったレーヨンコットン素材は防風・防水性に優れ、1940年代から50年代にかけてレインコートなどのレインウェアとしても用いられた。乗艦した空母において悪天候に見舞われ、過酷な状況に晒されても任務の遂行を余儀なくされるデッキクルー達にとって、多少の雨や海水を凌いでくれるジャケットが要求されるのは必然であった。

The Navy deck jackets were normally made of thick cotton jungle cloth but this jacket was made of rayon-cotton, which is very rare. The high-density rayon-cotton fabric, which was wind and water resistant, was used in raincoats and rainwear in the 1940s-50s. For the deck crews who were forced to carry out their duties under the severe weather conditions on aircraft carrier, the jackets needed to be excellent in this respect.
