米陸軍は第2次大戦中に取り入れたM-43フィールドジャケットやM-43パーカーのレイヤードシステムに成功し、その実績は50年代から60年代初頭にかけて採用されたフィールドジャケットやパーカーにも生かされた。防寒用のライニングとして用いられたのはフライトジャケットのMA-1にも使用されている保温性に優れたウールパイルで、アウターシェルに取り付けて着用する内側は滑りの良いレーヨン地が張られている。このウールパイルは経糸と緯糸に太番手のコットンを打ち込んで強度を出し、ウールを打ち込んで保温性を考慮した素材で、このウールパイルの存在が黄金期のフィールドジャケットとフライトジャケットを支えたのは言うまでもない。

The U.S. Army succeeded in developing a layered system for the M-43 field jacket and M-43 parka, and this achievement was utilized for other field jackets and parkas that were adopted from the 1950s to the early 1960s. The material opted for the thermal lining was the wool pile, which offers excellent heat retention and was also used for the MA-1 flight jackets, and a sleek rayon fabric for the reverse size. The wool pile is made by planting wool yarns into the cotton woven fabric and then brushing the wool up to increase heat-retention. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the this wool pile played in the most important role in the development of the field jackets and flight jackets of the golden era.
